Adoption
|
The Brazos Animal Shelter
receives thousands of dogs, cats, and other pets each
year that would make excellent family companions. Many of these
are purebred or obvious purebred mixes. Some people say that "mutts" make
the best and healthiest pets and the Shelter has plenty of those
to choose from!
Rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, and other
pets are also available at the Animal Shelter from time to time.
Unclaimed animals
and animals given up by their owners are evaluated for adoption.
Prospective pet owners are interviewed to assure that the lifestyles
and needs of the people and the animal will be compatible.
The adoption
fee charged by the Shelter includes a free spay or neuter that
is performed at a local vet clinic BEFORE the pet goes home.
Effective January 1, 1992 all dogs and cats adopted
from a Texas animal Shelter MUST be spayed or neutered, according to
Texas Chapter 828 Health & Safety Code.
Why spay or Neuter your pet? |

How do I adopt a pet at the Brazos Animal Shelter?
Once you
have found the animal that you are interested in adopting, you must fill
out an adoption application. There are four bottom lines that must
be met before you can take your new pet home:
- If you live in an apartment
and are interested in adopting a dog, you must choose one that
will remain under 25 pounds.
- A staff member must be able
to verify your landlord will allow pets. Pet deposits
must be paid before the animal goes home.
- All dogs that will grow over
25 pounds require a fenced yard IF they will live in the Bryan/College
Station city limits.
- All dogs and cats living with
the adopting family must be current on their rabies vaccinations.
If you live in Brazos County, any dogs, cats or ferrets you
own must have current Brazos County tags.

How
can I be notified when a specific breed of pet is available for
adoption?
If you are
interested in a certain type, size or breed of pet and would like to
be called when one is available, please read the following information:
- The
animal leaving this shelter, by state law must be spayed/neutered. Purebred
animals that will leave Brazos County, will be spayed/neutered at
a local vet
clinic before leaving town.
- You need to have an approved
breed waiting application on file at the shelter inorder to be part
of the breed waiting program.
- We hold
all applications 3 months. If
you are still interested at the end of this time, you will need to
fill out another application.
- If you
SEE the pet that you would like to adopt at the shelter and it is
still in its stray period
(72 hours from time received at shelter), you may apply for it. Although,
we CANNOT call you about it until the 3 days are up. We CAN
call about owner-surrended animals immediately.
- All of the people on breed waiting
will be called after a pet is available, and pets are adopted on
a first come, first serve basis only.
- If you find a pet somewhere
else or you are no longer interested, please call us and we will
remove your application.
