The Brazos Animal Shelter receives about 9,000 animals per year.
Many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens come through our doors as strays, but we also receive owner surrenders and pets that are not reclaimed by their owners. We also take in many other pets including rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils (and other pocket pets), iguanas and other reptiles, all kinds of birds, and ferrets are also available at the Shelter from time to time.
Unclaimed animals and animals given up by their owners are evaluated for adoption. Prospective pet owners are interviewed to assure that the lifestyles and needs of the people and the animal will be compatible.
The adoption fee charged by the Shelter includes a free spay or neuter that is performed at a local vet clinic BEFORE the pet goes home.
Effective January 1, 1992 all dogs and cats adopted from a Texas animal Shelter MUST be spayed or neutered, according to Texas Chapter 828 Health & Safety Code.
How Do I Adopt?
Once you have found the animal that you are interested in adopting, you must fill out an adoption application. Applicants interested in the pets must first be approved before being able to place a hold on or adopt out a pet that they are interested in. Adoptions are first come (approved), first serve. There are four bottom lines that must be met before you can take your new pet home:
- If you live in an apartment and are interested in adopting a dog, you must choose one that will remain under 25 pounds, or complete a letter of appeal.
- A staff member must be able to verify your landlord will allow pets. Pet deposits must be paid before the animal goes home.
- All dogs that will grow over 25 pounds require a fenced yard IF they will live in the Bryan/College Station city limits.
- All dogs and cats living with the adopting family must be current on their rabies vaccinations. If you live in Brazos County, any dogs, cats or ferrets you own must have current Brazos County tags.

Yes! We offer other animals for adoption such as horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, ferrets and mice. All of these adoptable animals can be seen on our Featured Pet and PetFinder pages when they are available. Livestock and pocket pets require a separate adoption application (this process is different from adopting a dog, cat or small mammal). You may complete this application in advance on our Other Animals Adoption Application.
We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
We only hold animals with an approved application for a 24-hour time period to help you to make the decision to adopt or not adopt. We do not hold animals or take payment over the phone to reserve or adopt animals. We adopt strictly on a first come, first serve basis. Please note that animals may not be adopted for other people.
