The Brazos Animal Shelter receives about 9,000 pets each year
Many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens come through our doors as strays, but we also receive owner surrenders and pets that are not reclaimed by their owners. We also take in many other pets including rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils (and other pocket pets), iguanas and other reptiles, all kinds of birds, and ferrets are also available at the Shelter from time to time.
Unclaimed animals and animals given up by their owners are evaluated for adoption. Prospective pet owners are interviewed to assure that the lifestyles and needs of the people and the animal will be compatible.
The adoption fee charged by the Shelter includes a free spay or neuter that is performed at a local vet clinic BEFORE the pet goes home.
Effective January 1, 1992 all dogs and cats adopted from a Texas animal Shelter MUST be spayed or neutered, according to Texas Chapter 828 Health & Safety Code.

If you are interested in a certain type, size or breed of pet and would like to be called when one is available, please read the following information:
- The animal leaving this shelter, by state law must be spayed/neutered. Purebred animals that will leave Brazos County, will be spayed/neutered at a local vet clinic before leaving town.
- You need to have an approved breed waiting application on file at the shelter inorder to be part of the breed waiting program.
- We hold all applications 3 months. If you are still interested at the end of this time, you will need to fill out another application.
- If you SEE the pet that you would like to adopt at the shelter and it is still in its stray period (72 hours from time received at shelter), you may apply for it. Although, we CANNOT call you about it until the 3 days are up. We CAN call about owner-surrended animals immediately.
- All of the people on breed waiting will be called after a pet is available, and pets are adopted on a first come, first serve basis only.
- If you find a pet somewhere else or you are no longer interested, please call us and we will remove your application.
